Constitution of the Nebraska Psychological Society

Article 1 — Name and Purpose

  1. The name of this organization shall be the Nebraska Psychological Society.
  2. The purpose of this organization shall be:
    1. To promote the scientific study of psychology,
    2. To advance teaching, research, and service in psychology,
    3. To serve as a foru m for academic psychology in the State of Nebraska.
Article II — Membership
  1. The Society shall consist of two categories of membership: Members and Student Members.
  2. Members of the Society shall be persons who are interested in the advancement of scientific psychology. Members shall be entitled to the rights and privileges of the Society without restriction. Only Members can vote or hold office on the Executive Board.
  3. The minimum standard for election to membership shall be:
    1. For Member, receipt of a doctorate in psychology (or closely related field) and actively involved in teaching, research, and/or practice in psychology or, if not doctorate in psychology (or closely related field), a clearly demonstrated interest and commitment to the science of psychology through teaching, research, and/or service.
    2. For Student Member, current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in psychology (or closely related field) with an interest in the science of psychology through teaching, research, and/or service.
    3. Such other requirements as may be deemed appropriate by the Executive Board.
  1. All Members and Student Members shall be treated without discrimination on the basis of age, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
  2. Membership dues are set by the Executive Board of the Society and paid to the Society annually.
Article III — Officers, Duties, and Terms of Office
  1. The officers of the Society shall consist of a President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and a Program Chair. Each shall perform the usual duties of the respective office and specific duties as provided elsewhere in this Constitution or as assigned by the Executive Board. Together these four individuals will serve as the Executive Board of the Society.
  1. The President shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the Society and conduct the business of the Society. The President’s term of office shall be two years beginning September 1. The President may not succeed himself or herself nor may s/he hold any other offices within the Society during his/her term.
  2. The Secretary shall maintain the records of the Society. The Secretary’s term of office shall be two years beginning September 1 and may be elected to no more than three consecutive full terms. The Secretary may not hold any other offices within the Society during his/her term.
  3. The Treasurer shall collect dues at the beginning of each academic year and provide an annual financial report to the Society. The Treasurer’s term of office shall be two years beginning September 1 and may be elected to no more than three consecutive full terms. The Treasurer may not hold any other offices within the Society during his/her term.
  4. The Program Chair shall organize the annual meeting of the Society with the approval of the Executive Board. The Program Chair’s term of office shall be one year beginning on September 1 and may be elected to no more than three consecutive full terms. The Program Chair may not hold any other offices within the Society during his/her term.
  1. If a vacancy occurs in an Executive Board office a special election to fill the position will be conducted within two months.
  2. The Executive Board shall hold an open meeting at least once a year at the Fall convention. A majority of Executive Board members must be present in order to conduct business.
  3. Elections shall be held at the Society’s meeting at the Fall convention.
Article IV — Committees
  1. The Committees of the Society shall consist of such standing Committees as may be provided by this Constitution and such special Committees as may be established by the Executive Board.
  2. The Executive Board shall have general supervision of the affairs of the Society, performing the duties and abiding by the limitations specified in this Constitution. Actions of the Executive Board changing Society policy are subject to approval by a majority of the Members voting at the annual meeting, or by special mail ballot as decided upon by the Executive Board.
Article V — Activities
  1. An annual convention of the Society shall be held for presentations regarding scientifically-oriented psychology in teaching, research, application, and advancement of human welfare. The meeting may be held in conjunction with other societies or organizations of similar interest. The Program Chair shall, with the approval of the Executive Board, set the date, location, agenda and program for the annual meeting.
  2. The annual business meeting of the Society shall be held at the Fall convention.
  3. The Society may establish or acquire newsletters, journals, or other publications.
  4. The Society shall take part in other activities that promote the science of psychology through teaching, research, and service.
Article VI — Rules of Procedure
  1. The rules contained in the current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order shall govern the Society in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with this Constitution and any special rules of order that the Society may adopt.
  2. In the case of actions taken at the annual business meeting, a special ballot to review such actions may be requested by 15% of the Members. A request to review such actions shall be sent to the President within thirty days following the annual meeting. The ballot shall be distributed to the Membership.
Article VII — Amendments
  1. This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of Members who reply to a ballot sent to the Membership. Amendments may be initiated by the Executive Board or by petition of 15% of the Membership.
Article VIII — Dissolution
  1. In the event of dissolution or termination of the Society, all the assets and title to and possession of the property of the Society shall pass to a similar scientific society selected by the Executive Board.
Amendment 1

In order to establish the Nebraska Psychological Society, a Caretaker Executive Board will be established immediately upon acceptance of this Constitution by interested parties and the Society shall begin to exist. This Caretaker Board will operate until December 31, 1994. Regular elections will occur during Fall 1994 within the guidelines of the Constitution to begin the regular cycle of terms. Membership on the Caretaker Executive Board shall not constitute a regular term of office and all members will be eligible for subsequent election to any office.
